"Profesor" Buenos Aires, Argentina. Yesterday there was a massive protest march in Buenos Aires that went right in front of my hotel. I heard all the noise- the drums, singing, TRUMPETS (protest marches in Latin America have really good music)- & ran outside to see what the commotion was. I asked some people "What are they protesting?"They said "The government!" Uh, dude... OF COURSE it's the government (I mean, isn't it always?), but WHY? "They are demanding a raise for teachers' salaries"- Ok, word. I don't get mixed up in foreign politics, because A) it's not my country & therefore not my place, & B) the situation at home is horrifying enough (it is irrefutable that America is currently running pedal to the metal on a full tank of high-test stupid juice) BUT... in general, educators the world over are very badly underpaid. So in a very general way, it was cool to go out & shoot photos of people trying to improve the circumstances of the people who are responsible for teaching the next generation (at least that's what I was told was happening.) Education is how people's circumstances improve, without fail, across the board- & a high tide raises all ships. We in America need to pay attention to that fact right now, with a proposed 13.6% budget cut to public education while adding 400 million to ramp up charter schools & VOUCHERS FOR PRIVATE & RELIGIOUS SCHOOLS. Um... anyone ever heard of SEPARATION OF CHURCH AND STATE? I got no problem with parents sending their kids to a religious school- that's their choice. But I don't wanna pay for your kid to go to Jesus Camp or Buddha University or whatever. Fuck that. That's on you- it's your belief system, so YOU pay for it. Why don't we take that $400 mil & give our teachers a raise, employ more of them, improve classroom conditions & shrink their sizes, expand school libraries so we can EXPAND THE YOUTH'S MINDS? Oh wait- that would make too much sense... DON'T CONFUSE ME WITH LOGIC, DAMMIT. Anyways, the Argentinians were rowdy but peaceful- made for some great street photography. Salute to all you teachers out there still doing your best in this grim era. Love y'all!#Leica #LeicaM #Monochrom
"AvΓ³" Rio de Janiero, Brazil. Rio is a city full of women on balconies, all looking down on the chaos below. I saw many during my time there, staring down at me as I went through the city- I wonder what they thought as I walked by... #Leica #LeicaCamera #LeicaCameraUSA #LeicaM #LeicaMonochrom #Monochrom #Summicron #Summicron75mm #πŸ”΄πŸ“· #MyLeicaJourney #MKexplore #blackandwhite #bnw_planet #bnw_life #pocket_bnw #bnw_captures #noir_shots #RatsEyesPhotography #HoneTheAesthetic
PLEASE READ & REPOST. I was born in MD, a few miles from the Chesapeake Bay. I grew up in Tidewater, VA & Cape Fear, NC. I'm a coastal native, born & bred. My family lives in Tidewater & Cape Fear. I'm a hardcore surfer, swimmer, fisherman, kayaker, paddle boarder. I wrote my last book in Cape Fear, & those of you here know that I shoot photos in/of the ocean & coastal areas often- water is my life in a visceral way. Now it's come to light that Chemours, a division of the giant DuPont corp, has been dumping the UNREGULATED toxin Gen X into our water supply, the Cape Fear River (which dumps DIRECTLY into the sea), for AT LEAST 6 years from 100 miles upriver in Fayetteville. Gen X replaced C8/PFOA, a compound used in Teflon until DuPont had to payout millions to residents of Ohio & West Virginia, THE LARGEST SETTLEMENT IN EPA HISTORY- it was discovered C8 caused cancer, birth defects & other problems in area residents- DuPont knew about its toxicity since AT LEAST 1961, but concealed it- this is history, not conspiracy theory. Now Cape Fear folks are extremely alarmed about Gen X in our drinking water, a UNREGULATED toxin that displays a lot of the same properties of C8. At a closed door meeting between Chemours reps & area officials, tap water was provided- Chemours reps declined to drink it. But I have been drinking it- FOR YEARS. My mother & brother have been- FOR YEARS. My other brother, his wife, & my little nephew have been drinking it when they visit Mom- FOR YEARS. We don't know the long-term effects of Gen X yet, because it's newer & UNREGULATED. I ordered reverse osmosis filtration systems for my family, the only way to remove Gen X from water. But it's already in MY FAMILY, & it's in ME. We don't know what it will do to us. No one does- adverse effects from toxins often take years to build up & manifest in people. Then what? We sue? Money doesn't help when you're dying of cancer. "Only after the last tree's cut, & the last river poisoned, only after the last fish is caught, will you find that money cannot be eaten"- I adopted that Cree prophecy for lyrics almost 10 years ago. I STILL DON'T WANT TO DRINK POISON. #Leica #CapeFear #chemours
Me mellow backside cruising perfect thigh-high waves at Doheny on a @suncultsurfofficial brand new Cape Fear model. Sun Cult is @dezfafara & family's new surf board/apparel company. I was the first one to ever wax down & then ride this prototype- pretty cool experience, in my opinion, plus it trimmed beautifully. Check out the Cape Fear & other models over at @suncultsurfofficial & support family owned businesses! Photo by the VA homie transplanted to LA, @andreasbranch.
"The Odd Expression Couple" Somewhere beneath Spanish Harlem, NYC. These two were sitting beside each other on the subway & they were hilarious to watch. The chick on the left, while quite beautiful & with amazing hair, was pretty um, "aggressive" with a bag of potato chips she was eating. It was like she was PUNCHING those chips into her face, then once they were gone I thought she was gonna eat the empty bag, Jabba the Hutt-style. AND she was dancing in her seat the whole time she was brutalizing the Frito Lays. The woman on the right had the most amazing range of looks that would come over her face with each new person that came on the train- from smiles to frowns to slightly worried to awe. She kinda had a kindly-but-slightly-disappointed-in-a-lot-of-her-students school teacher-type vibe. At one point a little kid started misbehaving & they both cut sharp disapproving eyes over at it at exactly the same time. It was like sitting across from some actors in an old silent movie. Gotta love the subway for people watching. #Leica #LeicaCamera #LeicaCameraUSA #LeicaM #LeicaMonochrom #Monochrom #Summilux #Summilux50mm #πŸ”΄πŸ“· #MyLeicaJourney #MKexplore #blackandwhite #bnw_planet #bnw_life #pocket_bnw #bnw_captures #noir_shots #RatsEyesPhotography #HoneTheAesthetic #streetphotography
"Pell St" Chinatown, NYC. I love walking and shooting photos in Chinatown. It's interesting, because NY's Chinatown is two different places for me when I'm there- there is the reality of the place, then there is the comic book version of it- literally, a comic book version. The reality of it is a bustling neighborhood with unique sounds, sights, & smells that render it a distinct sensory experience, different than the rest of New York. The comic book version of it comes from a series of graphic novels released by Vertigo/@dccomics called "DMZ", written by @brianwood.writer. DMZ takes place in the near future, when America has become so divided politically that there is a civil war raging between ultra-rightwing anti-federal militias & the US government (ummmm.... that could NEVER happen, right? hahaha)- the island of Manhattan is a DMZ (demilitarized zone) with neither side in control, & the citizens of NYC are just trying to survive. Chinatown is run by a Triad criminal leader named Wilson (who is kinda a good guy despite being a Chinese mafia boss). There are lots of illustrations of a near future Chinatown in DMZ, & whenever I am there I'm always looking for Wilson, kinda like Tom Hanks & his volleyball (yes, I know these are comic book characters & don't really exist. I look for Spider-Man sometimes too- it's FUN.) Anyway, DMZ is one of my favorite comics of all time, I wrote the introduction to the second trade volume of it ("Body of a Journalist"), and I encourage anyone to check it out if they want to immerse themselves in really well-written & scarily plausible version of NYC and a divided USA. Read it, then go have a wander in Chinatown & keep your eye out for Wilson... #Leica #LeicaCamera #LeicaCameraUSA #LeicaM #LeicaMonochrom #Monochrom #lomographynyc #minitar1artlens #πŸ”΄πŸ“· #MyLeicaJourney #MKexplore #blackandwhite #bnw_planet #bnw_life #pocket_bnw #bnw_captures #noir_shots #RatsEyesPhotography #HoneTheAesthetic #streetphotography #DMZ #brianwood

"Symmetry & Decay" NYC. While I was in New York for Bad Brains rehearsals & the show, I filled what little free time I had with my favorite NYC activity- street photography. To wander the streets with my Leica M (the perfect street photography camera) is always a blast- there's just so much cool stuff to shoot. One morning my friends @kevinwilsonnyc & @aceypics took me to the Lomography store, and they hooked me up with a really neat little lens, a pancake M-mount 32mm called the Minitar-1. Leica optics are incredibly sharp all throughout (one reason I love them so much), but the Minitar-1 has some really cool barrel distortion around the edges- it's marketed as an "art lens", & it shoots as such. I've had a lot of fun shooting with it- I felt it really captured the grime of this building on the outskirts of Chinatown. Photography for me is about seeing things in different ways- while nothing can replace my Leica lenses, it's always cool to have another tool in my camera bag, especially one that takes up almost no space. So thanks for the rad talk about photography, @lomographynyc, and the great little lens! I'll be posting a few shots I got with it on my M Monochrom. Cheers! #Leica #LeicaCamera #LeicaCameraUSA #LeicaM #LeicaMonochrom #Monochrom #Minitar1artlens #πŸ”΄πŸ“· #MyLeicaJourney #MKexplore #blackandwhite #bnw_planet #lomography #lomographynyc #bnw_life #pocket_bnw #bnw_captures #noir_shots #RatsEyesPhotography #HoneTheAesthetic #streetphotography
For those of you that missed the secret @badbrainsofficial set (and that would be almost, um, everybody-they had to keep it quiet or else it would have been waaaaay too out of hand), my friend @darryl.jenifer's art will still be hanging in the gallery in Brooklyn until August 1st. The gallery, @okayspace, is under the @okayplayer umbrella (run by @questlove & @theroots)- it's a really cool space! Beside Darryl's art, there are original pieces by @obeygiant (Shepard Fairy) & some awesome Bad Brains photography (including photos from the early days in the DC scene by two-time Pulitzer winner @lucianperkins). The space has a great vibe and the people that work there are amazing, so if you are in NYC stop by & see some art! 281 North 7th St, Brooklyn, NY #badbrains #pma #mindpower #darryljenifer
Tonight was one of the best nights of my life. Bad Brains played a secret show in Brooklyn at an art gallery for the opening of their bassist's art exhibit- no stage, on the floor with the people, straight-up old-school style. That's why I'm in NYC, to help these dudes out with a couple of the faster tunes. The full original lineup of Bad Brains played- HR sang "Jah Love" "The Youth Are Getting Restless" & "Re-Ignition". Then I sang "The Big Takeover" & "Banned In DC". Then Sid McCray, the FIRST singer of Bad Brains closed it out by singing "Regulator" for the first time since 1978. HOLY COW. The crowd went INSANE. In these divisive times, we all UNITED tonight in one huge, intense ball of PMA- black, white, yellow, red, brown, male, female- all of us were UNITED- all you saw & felt were smiles. Absolutely incredible, & punk rock to the core. You could just FEEL the love in the air. I sang with my favorite band of all time tonight- I can't explain how that makes me feel. So thanks for asking me to be here, @badbrainsofficial! ONE LOVE PEOPLE! ❀️✊🏻✊🏼✊🏽✊🏾✊🏿❀️ Photo by: @kevinwilsonnyc. #badbrains #pma

"Why so serious?" New York City, still THE BEST city in the world for street photography. Only in NYC do you randomly happen upon a guy who just decided to dress up as The Joker on a Tuesday night (no, there was no Comicon or Halloween Party or whatever) & then go haggle over cheap jewelry on the sidewalk. Gotta love the Big Apple- it's a treasure trove for my #Leica! #Leica #LeicaCamera #LeicaCameraUSA #LeicaM #LeicaMonochrom #Monochrom #Summilux #Summilux50mm #πŸ”΄πŸ“· #MyLeicaJourney #MKexplore #blackandwhite #bnw_planet #bnw_life #pocket_bnw #bnw_captures #noir_shots #RatsEyesPhotography #HoneTheAesthetic #streetphotography
"Grizz Shakas" When the waves are too small for me to surf, I can always shoot the groms & work on my water photography a bit. Surfing is good for kids in so many ways- it teaches respect for the ocean/nature and their fellow humans (there is a very specific type of etiquette in surfing, and while it varies region to region, the main emphasis is on RESPECT- depending on where you are, the repercussions for not showing proper respect can be quite severe- there is no equivalent of the "internet troll" in the water- stuff gets sorted. QUICKLY), it encourages kids to be themselves & develop their own personal style to express themselves, it teaches them to watch out for others' well-being, and (obviously) it keeps them in good shape- you don't see many out of shape surfer kids. And I love surfing with the groms, just as much as I love surfing with my elders- I've surfed at the same session with people ages (literally) 8 to 80. That's one of the best things about it, a unique community feeling. So respect to the elders still out there having a dig, & shout out to all you groms- keep ripping! This metal/horror punk hybrid album, "Doyle II- As We Die", drops today from my bro @doylewvf, old-school guitarist of the legendary MISFITS. I sing on this track, "Virgin Sacrifice"- it was cool to let loose with a little creepiness, hahaha. For me, to get asked to sing on the record of a dude I have been listening to since high school is a HUGE deal (for Pete's sake, I rocked a DEVIL LOCK myself for years) so thanks for having me, Doyle- love ya, buddy! Now, as always, I am a #fiendforlife. So show some support to my monstrous pal & buy this record, out now on iTunes & in stores. Cheers! #weare138 #doyle #doylewolfgangvonfrankenstein #misfits #cancerslug #toomuchhorrorbusiness
(See previous post) #throwbackthursday part 2: Me skinning a rattlesnake with a sharp rock. Arizona has 13 different rattlesnake species. We were a many miles hike out in the desert, nowhere near a hospital, but this one met his doom at the end of a heavy stick- rattlesnakes strike quickly, so you gotta be careful hunting them. I skinned him & cooked him on another stick, no seasoning. Plain old rattlesnake doesn't taste like chicken- it tastes like SNAKE. This snake lost its life to feed me. I was grateful to it, & gave thanks. THIS IS WHERE FOOD COMES FROM, not the grocery store. @codylundinsurvival #cavemanstyle #beamanaboutit
I don't do this sorta thing often, but because I've been thinking about certain things, here's a #throwbackthursday- this photo was taken 9 years ago (I think?). I was in the Verde desert in AZ w/my pal @codylundinsurvival on an aboriginal living skills/survival training trip. The first 6 days at a primitive base camp we made tools that ancient people used- water containers, weapons, traps, cordage (civilization would have never happened if we didn't have string- true story), stone knives, etc. Then we walked out into the desert w/nothing but the clothes on our back & primitive tools. Even at the beginning of the trip, we had very little modern tools- steel knives & a plastic water bottle (no matches though)- by the end those were taken away (he did let me keep a camera to document the trip). We had carried a little food out into the desert, but by the end, if you didn't gather it or kill it, you didn't eat- all the food was gone. I grew up in the sticks, & have always been able to take care of myself in the woods, but I learned an immense amount on this trip. This is a pack rat I killed using a Paiute deadfall trap- I cut the sticks for it myself, made the cordage from plant fibers, baited it with cactus fruit I gathered. Then I skinned the rat (with A ROCK) & cooked it on a stick, no seasoning. I hadn't eaten much in two days, & that rat was good- it gave it its life for me, & I appreciated that. The reason I am posting this is that I have been thinking a lot about diet lately, about what I eat & where it comes from. I'm not yelling team vegan or anything, but I am starting to think that if I didn't kill it or know that it was killed ethically, I probably shouldn't eat it- that rules out most meat. The whole factory farming thing is really screwed up, & who knows what they are feeding those cows & pumping them full of? I am of the opinion that if you eat meat, AT LEAST ONCE in your life, you should KILL SOMETHING YOURSELF, SKIN IT, COOK IT, & EAT IT. Ladies, pardon the expression, because this goes for y'all females too, but... BE A MAN ABOUT IT. If you're too squeamish to kill an animal, then you shouldn't eat meat. Just my thoughts. #cavemanstyle
