An appropriate coffee mug for episode 72. I talk a little bit about the "face" on mars and how that myth was busted by NASA from the start. The public kinda just ran with the story, because, well it does look like a face in this picture. Subsequent photographs show the true structure of the rock formation. Second picture is from the Mars Global Surveyor orbiter (2001). Episode 72 out shortly, subscribe today, link in Bio!

All major feats begin with the seed of an idea. Here is the predecessor of the 🌖 landing, Mars Rover & Voyager spacecrafts 🛰racing ever onwards in the depths of space🌌. This is Dr. Robert Goddard, 'The Father of American 🇺🇸Rocketry🚀' transporting a rocket in 1️⃣9️⃣3️⃣0️⃣ in Roswell, New Mexico. There probably would not have been a Space Age without his accomplishments. #rocketscience #robertgoddard #rocketry #1930 #nasa #spacestuff #vintagespace #modeltford #roswellnewmexico #rocket #spaceflight #1930s #rocketlaunch #nasagoddard #rocketman #roswell #spacehistory #vintagecar #rockets #pioneer #nasa🚀 #spacepioneers
I received a comment recently from @greenglensattal and @apals.photo asking why I hadn’t posted anything lately…so here’s for you. I remember May 5, 1961 like it was yesterday. I was 13 years old and standing on our front porch looking through the widow watching the B&W television inside, hoping the launch of the first manned American Mercury-Redstone 3 rocket with astronaut Alan Shepard aboard, would happen before my school bus arrived. It did…what an event that was… and it was just a sub-orbital flight! The idea that a man would go to the moon was as foreign as walking across the ocean. How then was it possible that 48 years ago on July 20, 1969 I again sat in front of a television and watched astronaut Neil Armstrong become the first human to step on the moon?? So when the 1984 feature ‘The Right Stuff’, chronicling the first 15 years of America's space program by focusing on the lives of the seven Mercury astronauts premiered, I had to be first in line to see it. The film was nominated for eight Academy Awards and won four, including ‘Best Film Editing’. So who won an Academy Award for editing? That smiling face above did. That is Glenn Farr, a friend who had spent his earlier time in the Utah film circle. Now here comes the the ‘real’ story in all of this. The following year, 1985, I was responsible for putting on a local cinematography workshop with the topic being film editing, so immediately Glenn came to mind. When I called to ask him this favor, in total Glenn Farr humility he said, “Sure George…I’d love to, but why would you want ME to come?” Don’t you love the ‘real’ people in this world. #filmmaking #filmmaker #filmproduction #moviemaking #cinematography #cinematographer #documentary #behindthescenes #onset #camera #videoproduction #filmcrew #cameraman #gaffer #grip #cinema #cameraassistant #director #producer #1stac #keygrip #therightstuff #astronaut #filmeditor #academyawardwinner #spacerace #friendship7 #walkonthemoon #spacehistory

Facsimile of the U.S. Customs Declaration, signed by the returning Apollo 11 Crew. On this day in 1969 the crew of Apollo 11 returned to Earth. They spent the next 21 days in quarantine. This document was supposedly signed by the crew and is the first record of an importation to our planet from another celestial body, with the astronauts signing to confirm departure from the ‘Moon’ and arrival at ‘Honolulu Hawaii’. Cargo is noted as ‘Moon Rock and Moon Dust samples’, and, in the section relating to the ‘Declaration of Health’, the question ‘any other condition on board which may lead to the spread of disease’ is ominously answered ‘TO BE DETERMINED’. There is a debate as to whether the document was a tongue-in-cheek PR stunt or a genuine piece of space red tape. The location of the original document is unknown – with this high quality copy one of the few remaining examples available for study. It was sent to the UK Customs and Excise Board at some point between 1969 and 1973 as an item of interest. #OTD #space #spacehistory #NASA #apollo #apollo11 #neilarmstrong #buzzaldrin #michaelcollins #redtape #customs #anythingtodeclare

Episode 67 is out. Here's a little note for the winner of the Lego Saturn V. This episode is a bit longer than usual, but I've got some awesome Apollo 11 audio from when Armstrong and Aldrin landed on the moon.
Happy 48th Anniversary, Apollo 11!
